So you’ve made a solid decision to continue your education, knowing what you want to do and how to do it. You’re off on a new journey in the world of higher education and you are back being a student, going to classes and learning in whichever ways you have chosen, in person, online, and of course your own time studying. As the journey takes sustained effort, continued determination and sometimes a bit of grit, how do you stay focused so that you can benefit from your time and achieve the accolades you seek to achieve? Let’s get into that and talk about what it means to stay focused and how to do it.
Any endeavor in life requires a certain level of focus to see it through, meaning you’re paying attention, you are present and putting out the effort needed to complete the tasks and perform at the levels required to make progress. When it comes to learning in particular, it can require even higher levels of focus and sustained attention than other pursuits and this is a reserve that we tap into that is not unlimited. It must be utilized effectively and also replenished regularly. If we are able to maintain consistency going to class, completing assignments in time, learning the key things we need to learn until we earn the credentials that we seek, then it can be said that we stayed focused. Otherwise, there may have been something left to be desired, so how do we maintain focus, especially in light of the demands of life as a busy adult in addition to probably coming back to school after such a long time not doing anything educationally? Well, first things first, after you have started, just keep showing up. Then everything else should fall in place.
It may sound simple but continuing to show up is not a ubiquitous trait in people, but when it comes to education it is half the battle. There can be many hurdles along the way when you choose to go back to school, leading to feeling overwhelmed and maybe even wanting to give up. But if you choose to stick it out and just show up, things tend to get better as you go along. Here are some of the benefits of just showing up: 1. You make every class so you at least present for the all the material 2. If it doesn’t make sense at first you have more of a chance to understand it. 3. Your professor will see your good attendance record and if it counts towards your grade, you would have been credited with that. 4. With a consistent record, you tend to get more done than not, and hopefully results will come. These are some benefits and you may be able to come up with more. One of the most powerful ways to maintain your standing in class and even get ahead or over come learning hurdles is just to show up. Just by giving yourself the time on a regular basis with consistent exposure to the material, it should be easier. This is the number one way of maintain focus. As an otherwise accomplished adult, this should be easy for you because you’ve been showing up for years to jobs, for your kids, for your family, and you know how important it is. You don’t have to worry about making gargantuan efforts to cram for midterms and finals when you just show up on a regular basis because you can get the material a little bit at a time. You don’t have to worry about grasping difficult subjects or completing more challenging assignments because when you show you get on of the most important aspects of maintaining focus, which is time.
If you can show up, other things in terms of bolstering and maintaining focus are subsidiary. Then in addition, make sure you get enough rest, enough recovery time to recharge your mental batteries. Schedule time for yourself to relax and have some down time to get ready for upcoming studies ahead. This will ensure that you can continue to show up energized and ready to go, and will make your consistent regular effort a strong and even more focused one. So on top of showing up, you want to make sure you can show up ready and that comes down to what you do outside of class. It takes a level of discipline to balance your in class time all of your other responsibilities and then taking time to refresh and recuperate, but find the time and your educational journey will be that much more enhanced.
In a nut shell, as we know maintain focus in anything we do is paramount to achieving success, especially in education, we as adults must find way to maintain focus, but at the root it comes down to one thing: Show up. If you show up and work consistently, the results should come. If you balance your work and educational life and all your other responsibilities including familial, community, and whatever it may be, with adequate time to recuperate and recharge, then you should find that showing up time all the more powerful and easier to sustain and therefore you’ll get more out of your educational journey and you’ll have an easier journey. And all in all it will be plain to see from the outside looking in that you have been maintaining focus. As an already well to do person, this should be no secret because you have done enough in other spheres of your life to know what it takes to achieve something. This is something you can already bring to the table with the life experience you have, and therefore you are coming prepared. So now you have to apply that to going to school again and maintain focus like you’ve done in other aspects of your life. It may take a higher level of sustained focus to complete your newly started educational journey, but you understand how to maintain focus and you’ve got what it takes.
