When it comes to getting started on your continuing education journey, its all about having clear goals to strive for and so you want to set your goals early and articulate them well enough so you know exactly what it is you want to do. That way, you’ll have a sure target to aim for and you’ll be able to have the right focus when it comes to how you want to educate yourself and your efforts will come more smoothly and be worthwhile. Things need to be realistic, but guess what, being where you’re at in life, this should be easy for you as you have most likely set plenty of goals and achieved them. Let’s discuss this further.
Many people are familiar with the SMART acronym when it comes to goal setting, S standing for specific, M for measurable, A for achievable, R for relevant, and T for time- bound. At this point in life you should be wise enough to be fill all this criteria when it comes to goal- planning, but you don’t have to go through this list. You need to first find something that is worthwhile enough to stay with and at that level it should inherently fill out all the criteria on its own, so long as you have a level enough head on your shoulders. The point is if you are an adult who has already achieved in other endeavors and has had there fair share of responsibilities, the science of goal setting should already be familiar to you. So when it comes to education, it shouldn’t be too different, you just need to make sure it will be worthwhile enough for you.
For example, you may decide that you want attain a higher degree in order to obtain the next level of employment in your respective field. That is a pretty specific goal description (achieve A to become B) and if that is compelling enough for you, than you can proceed onto a mental checklist figuring out the other logistics and having a grasp of how it can be measured, how long it would take and what may be the checkpoints along the way you need to pass in order to make it to the end. Essentially, with the right initial mindset, which you should have as level- headed adult, you are performing the SMART goal assessment almost automatically. And this is all because you have enough life experience to look at it the right way.
So essentially you’ve already done most of the work in your life to get to the point of deciding on continuing your education, and the main thing you have to do is actually go for it. If you look ahead to attaining more education, just start and articulate to yourself what you’d like to do. Are you interested in another degree, some sort of certification, is it larger or smaller? In either case you just need to state it and be specific so you have a clear idea of what you are aiming for, but again being that you should already be experienced enough with goal setting as a competent adult, this should all come quite easy. At the end of the day, goal setting at your stage in life should be second nature, where you don’t really have to be taught so much how, you just have to go ahead and do it. Its actually quite simple, and perhaps more so than when you were young because you already have ample experience as an adult setting and achieving goals, now you just have to make them educationally oriented and the rest should take care of itself.
Other than actually articulating a goal, you may be concerned with the logistics, but in today’s world with so many options and resources you typically don’t have to worry about what will accommodate your life best because there is most likely a program that can adapt to your schedule and your needs. So in a lot of ways you don’t have to worry if you want to do it from home, take night classes, take more time, etc., because there should be a program out there that will offer these for you. The biggest concern here may be money but there are even ways to deal with that from financial aid, scholarships, grants, payment plans, and hopefully it will not be too big an obstacle. The biggest thing to contend with is the will, are you willing to see this through to the end to achieve the educational goals that you have articulated so that you can complete whatever it is you have in mind? So if the will is there, the logistics should not be a major issue.
All in all, goal setting for adults seeking to continue their education is not difficult because as a capable adult who has come so far, one should already be conversant and experienced in goal setting and achievement. So when it comes to education you need only describe in clear detail what you would like and then go for it. Being realistic is what you do because you’ve made it this far anyway, so it is no something you necessarily have to be taught. If you are a level headed enough person who has handled enough responsibility and taken care of life for a while than you don’t necessarily have to be taught about goal setting. In the arena of education, it is not different at its core than in any other arena. Also, any other concerns, including scheduling, costs or any particular needs are typically easily to deal since there are so many options out there nowadays. Today in the vast and diverse educational space, there is so much available for people with varying specific needs that it is perhaps easier than ever to continue your education. With that being said, when it comes to setting your educational goals, the most important piece of this puzzle is if you will be determined and willing enough to see it through. The key aspect is you, if you want it and are motivated enough, then it’s a goal for you.
